It’s never too late
Starting to dance in your 50s, 60s and beyond
Plenty of adults come to dance later in life: after the kids have left, after retirement, or simply after deciding it’s finally time. You don’t need any experience, and you won’t be the only person in the room with a few grey hairs.

Every adult age is welcome
Beach Ballroom is an adults-only studio for anyone 18 and over, and the studio’s own words are that whether you’re in your 20s or your 70s, it’s never too late to learn to dance. Beginner classes are built for people who’ve never danced, and partners rotate, so you’ll dance with people of all ages.
If you danced years ago and are coming back to it, that’s welcome too. A $99 consultation will place you at the right level instead of starting from scratch.
Styles that suit a gentle start
Waltz
A steady tempo and simple steps. Most ballroom beginners start here. See how to waltz.
Foxtrot
Danced to big band and Sinatra, the songs many people grew up with. Read about the foxtrot.
Rumba and bachata
Unhurried tempos, small steps and plenty of time to think. Both are popular with people starting later.
Looking after yourself
Go at your own pace. Take breaks when you need them, bring water, and wear smooth-soled shoes that support your feet; grippy sneakers make turns harder on the knees. If you have a joint, balance or heart concern, check with your doctor first and let your coach know before you start, so they can adapt steps for you.
Private lessons are worth considering if you’d like a slower pace or want to work around a specific concern. Every minute is focused on you and your coach dances with you. Our comparison of group and private lessons can help you decide.
Nobody is timing you. Dance at the pace that feels good.
Getting to the studio
The studio is at 1501 Queen Street East in the Beaches, with Green P lots and street parking a short walk away, and a TTC stop at Woodfield Road almost at the door. The studio is open weekdays from 4 to 9 pm and Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30. There’s a changing room and three private gender-neutral bathrooms.
Your first dance can still be ahead of you
