Tango, the improvised one
Argentine tango in Toronto, one walk at a time
Argentine tango looks like the most complicated dance in the room. It’s actually built on walking. What makes it hard, and addictive, is that nobody knows the next step in advance, including the person leading.

A dance with no script
Most partner dances you learn as patterns: a figure, then another figure, strung together. Argentine tango works differently. The lead proposes a step through the embrace, the follow answers, and the dance is built in real time from a small vocabulary of walks, pauses, pivots and crosses.
That’s the appeal for a lot of adults. There’s no routine to forget. There’s also nowhere to hide, which is why the first few lessons focus almost entirely on walking well and listening through your chest rather than your hands.
If you’re still deciding between this and the sharper, choreographed ballroom version, our page comparing ballroom and Argentine tango lays out the differences.
The embrace takes some getting used to
Argentine tango is often danced in a close embrace, chest to chest, and for many beginners that’s the real nerve to get past. It helps to know that a good embrace is about connection, not squeezing. You keep your own balance and share a little of the other person’s.
There’s also an open embrace with more space between partners, and beginners often start there while they find their axis. A good coach will move between them as you get comfortable.
Nobody expects you to be relaxed in a close embrace on day one. That comes from walking a lot of songs.
