Timing your first dance

How long should a first dance be? Shorter than the song.

Most songs couples choose run longer than a comfortable first dance. That’s fine. Trimming the music is normal, it makes the dance easier to learn, and guests will never notice what’s missing.

The length most couples land on

At Beach Ballroom, most first dances come in at 90 seconds to 2 minutes. That’s long enough to feel like a real dance, with a beginning, a highlight and an ending, and short enough that you won’t run out of choreography or energy.

Parent dances tend to be shorter still. For a father-daughter or mother-son dance, 60 to 90 seconds is plenty.

Why shorter works better

Less to learn

For beginners

Every extra minute is more steps to remember. Cutting the song is often the difference between a relaxed dance and a stressful one.

Attention is high for the first minute or so and starts drifting after that. End while everyone’s still watching.

A stronger ending

The bit people film

A good edit lets you finish on a big musical moment rather than a slow fade-out.

Where to make the cut

The usual approach is to keep the opening, jump to the strongest chorus or bridge, and finish on a clear musical ending. Repeated verses are the first thing to go. A good edit follows the song’s phrasing, so the join sounds natural rather than chopped.

Some couples go further: start with a slow song, then switch to something upbeat, or combine two songs into a mash-up. It’s a crowd favourite, and the music edit is what makes the switch land cleanly. At Beach Ballroom, music editing is included in the 12-lesson wedding package.

  • Listen through and mark the moment that gives you goosebumps. Build around it.
  • Cut whole phrases, never mid-line.
  • Check the edit sounds right on a speaker, not just headphones.
  • Give your DJ or band the exact edited file well before the day.
